So he said he would refund the full amount if I sent it back to him, but the shipping costs to Japan would entirely defeat the purpose of returning the damn thing. I asked for a higher partial refund than the seller originally offered because he offered a very small fraction of what I paid. He responded with the following:

"Thank you for your offer. You bought the jar in the auction and the value of the ended price was below the unit cost of the jar belive it. It was already a bargain for you. The part that is broken does not prevent usage of the jar. We also paid USD 35 to ship it to you plus the insurance ticket. That already is another GBP20.00 and we still offered a refund of GBP6.00 to add to this and we would not claim from the Post Office as the procedure starts from your Post Office. We think our offer is fair to be honest. We can go another two pounds and make it GBP8.00as we do not wish to lose you as a valued cutomer. We hope you will accept this final offer."

My counter offer of GBP10.00 was fair; we both were losing money, but at least I would have been satisfied and he would not have lost my future business. First of all, the seller sets the starting bid, so it should not have been priced at a level he would be dissatisfied to sell. Second of all, he claimed the item as worth less than half of what I paid for it, so if I filed a claim with the post office, I wouldn't be able to get the amount I paid for it through them, either. And finally, why would I want to use a broken item when I got ripped off?

blah.
